1) What is the difference between OpManager Professional Edition and OpManager Distributed Edition

OpManager Distributed Edition is the scalable, distributed version of OpManager Professional Edition and can scale tens of thousands of interfaces and Switch Ports. Distributed Edition has a Probe-Central architecture where multiple Probes can be installed at different locations and collect data from the respective locations whereas Professional Edition is a single installation and can scale a few thousand interfaces and Switch Ports . All probes communicate to the Central via secured HTTPS connection and exchange information regularly.

Distributed Edition lacks a few features that are already available in Professional Edition, viz Process Monitoring, MSSQL back end support, IPSLA and VMware Monitoring. These features will be available soon in the subsequent releases.

2) Can you please explain the difference between OpManager Distributed Edition and MSP Center Plus?
Both MSP Center Plus and OpManager Distributed Edition have a probe-central architecture. The main difference between them is MSP Center Plus has the Remote Management and HelpDesk & Service Automation modules inbuilt, while the OpManager DE is built only for scalable Network Monitoring. However a loose integration of the famous helpdesk software ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus is possible with OpManager Distributed Edition. 3) Why am I not able to discover devices in my network? I have my Probe installed on a Windows Vista machine?

We are using a tool called "Nmap" to discover network devices. We found that this version of Nmap that we are using, is not supported by Windows Vista. Please follow the manual steps to make discovery work in such a scenario.
  • Shut down OpManager Distributed Probe Server
  • Navigate to <OpManagerProbeHome>/conf folder
  • Take a backup of the file discovery.properties
  • Open and edit the original discovery.properties to change the "PING" parameter to PING=true. Initially it would be set as "false"
  • Save and close the file. Restart OpManager Probe Server
4) I am not able to discover devices from an input file I provided. It says "OpManager could not find the file you specified. Please try again". What could be the reason?

A couple of reasons as mentioned below can cause this to happen.
  • OpManager Distributed Edition demands the input discovery file to be present in the same physical machine (multiple drives of the same machine are supported) where the Probe Server is installed. If you had tried discovering with a file from a different machine, you would have got this error. This has been enforced to make Distributed edition more secure
  • We have understood that this issue occurs when file based discovery is attempted using either of the browsers Firefox 3 or Opera 9. Except for this all other features in OpManager Distributed Edition is supported by all the latest browsers available
5) I am not able to locate a few admin features in the installation though you claim that it is available in this Edition. Please help?

OpManager Distributed Edition has a Probe-Central architecture and hence the admin functionality is split between both the servers. All configuration functions are available in Central Server while all discovery and monitoring parameters can be set in Probe Server. Refer this page for a complete list of the admin functions available.
